and thank you so much for being here with us celebrating the start of our Lenten season this 2021 and what a 2020 we reflect on the next week come to the season of Lent we think of the time of renewal we think of a time of refreshing so I just wanted to say thank you for the Paul for starting our Lenten season with us and Deacon leave thank you so much I miss got any Gallagher thank you so much for I'm making all this possible to a wonderful students Gabby and Jennifer thank you as always a principal Gilmore vice president Seroquel and dumb is Ruben's has joined us today here in our in our Chapel at the Blessed Sacrament here at Carroll I went to a special hello to Miss Kelly branaman secretary for Catholic schools that she was supposed to be with us today but unfortunately is not feeling well so I know that she may be tuning in so just know that you're here with us in spirit so just wanted to say thank you LS just take a minute to pause ourselves to get ourselves in a great place to ask the Lord for all you do for His blessings but most importantly we say thank you to God for all that he does for us thank you for the party brothers and sisters in the second reading we're going to hear one little three word adverb that is so important in our lives and that three word adverb is Al how is the time of Salvation now is the time for the Lord to come into our hearts and you know it's a very dangerous word that we often use the discounts or discredits now and that's the word tomorrow a man like tomorrow I'll do my homework or tomorrow I'll make peace with that friend or tomorrow I'll apologize for hurting my mother but the season of Lent as we just heard from Mr Savoy exactly about news exactly about getting rid of all those Tendencies we have to say tomorrow and to stay instead what church now so now we Gather in God's humble and God free love and we asked the Lord to bless us as we begin this journey of let Lord have mercy have mercy Christ have mercy Lord have morning church and I have to compliment our readers they did such an awesome job and Gabby you really did punch that now now so that they could hear you in the back row now what are we doing now what are we doing now we're beginning went and unfortunately it seems to me that we so often reduce this marvelous season 2 something pretty little and insignificant what is Lent lent when you give up chocolate Lance when you don't eat desserts lense when you stop drinking beer I know mr. Seroquel hates that part of that a man we reduce went to these little things like saying that what is football football is an offside penalty for yes and also I pedal is part of football but football is something as small as that what is left what are we doing now and I thought the way we would think about it as simply to look at how we begin lent we're going to in a few moments after I'm finished walking I'm going to sprinkle on your forehead some dust and I'm going to say a few word ancient words that have been said over centuries and centuries I'm going to say today that alternative turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel to what I want to do right now in my home we is just take those two phrases and it opened them so that we might hear them a little bit more deeply in our and understand what they mean for us to that as we go into this Lenten season the goal will be to do what we start with turn away from sin and by faithful first turn away from sin what does that mean turn away from sin again even that phrase can become reduced to the little things you know I'm I'm going to be I'm going to stop doing this little bad habit in I developed this good or I'm going to stop doing this little bad thing and start doing this better thing again that's not really the sense of of the word the sense of the word really comes from the word repent and that word comes from Greek word which means to to put on a new mind to change the mind that we have and take on a new mind a new way of seeing it for me but images same as I was praying for the Church of God today is is imagine that you're stuck down in a dark cave I don't know about you but 20/20 his truck kind of like that's exactly what I have learned you are a bad I read The 20/20 why did the cave still seems the surrounding but imagine that you're stuck down in a dark cave huh but in that cave you see off into the distance a clear light that clearly says to you even is dark and is dank and it's terrible as this place you're in is you can see that light and you can see there must be a way to get there all I have to do start walking start walking toward the light well that's what it means to turn away from sin it means precisely to begin to recognize that even in the dark cave can surround us and they do surround that song we have a light to where we can go lent begins with recognizing we are sinners huh and it is and some of that. this around us some of that cave like existence we chose it we chose it by our choices huh and out of our fear and out of our anxiety and stress and worry which can be the the pressure that's on us we do bad things we lash out in anger right we hold resentment and grudges against people we we should forgive we gossip about our classmates at all this makes her more and more trapped in the cave but today the call of the Gospel the call of the the moment the call of the now is turn away from that darkness of our Behavior turn away from those fears turn away from this anxiety and start moving toward that light turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel the second part of that of course is be faithful to the purple what's that what's the gospel of Matthew Mark Luke and John okay yeah this was the four gospels what does the word let's see if anybody can tell me answer this what does the word gospel simply mean what would be the easiest way to translate gospel group good you to send good news is Gilmer thank you just pumped and Miss Gilbert will Gilmore Good gospel simply means the good news and what is the good news. this is this the good news is that Jesus loves us not only that he loves us but Jesus is in the cave with us he's not only a light-switch we're going but he's that little light in our hearts that encourage us to say go towards the light he has chosen to come down on to the cross and be in the cave be in those dark places that we all feel stuck in and he is there to encourage us with that love to what we're doing when we're believing the gospel is we're really trusting in that good news boy that is good news Bible about you but then I would have. Dave not only what I want to see the light but I would want a guy who might help me through the twists and turns cuz you never know where this might be a cliff and you're falling off the cliff and you're not going to get there any good news is brought sister said yes we're in dark key but we have Jesus in that cave with us leading us to the light telling us you know earlier today I was talking to doctor Warden she is by the way they will boast what are dr. Ward is producing irr video today the doctor Ward is the poet laureate and she share with me a marvelous poem that she wrote in in in in in the honor I think of black history month is called tell tell them we are rising is not a great work tell them we are rising that's the good news huh but Jesus is saying you are rising despite the darkness I intake can you to the lights just follow me picture this Sweat Brothers and Sisters what I want to suggest we do whatever the practices we might embrace my feet is that we would do things that would help us to precisely turn away from sin and trust in God before I take my seat I wanted to tell you another word that's connected to turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel I want to give you a prayer Warrior can I give you a prayer word or you can take until Aunt and use the word I've been using and it's coming right out of the ashes I'm about to sprinkle on your head what is this let go of fear and Trust in my love. Paul's love God. Friend that's the prayer word that I suggest we take into this land and seas can we say let go of fear trust in my love let go of fear trust in my love because that's really what it means to to turn away from Sin Sin so often is exactly something we do because we act out of fear and the Lord is calling us into a mind of trust in his love do you notice I didn't say turn away from Fear I originally was going to take it make more sense they turn away from fear and and and and Trust in my love I didn't say turn away from Fear because brothers and sisters to be the coward's way amen sometimes we have to face our fears we can't run away from our fears you know we might have a fear that we have a paper due this Friday and if we turn away from that fear we might just simply said not going to do it now that's not the answer it's taking that fear of that test on Friday or that paper on Friday and saying okay I'm letting go of the fear that I'm going to fail I'm trusting in the love God has for me and my I'll get to work on setting it to letting go of fear is not turning away from it but it's facing the fears we have the Manis fears we have I would say this year 2021 was because Marshalls we lived in the United States of fear a man we lived in the United States of worried but as we going to 2021 and is we going to this Lenten season we want to be the United States of trust trusting God's love I want to conclude my homily with a word from dr. King because for me dr. King gave me a word some years ago that I have used my own heart and it is precisely at a kind of incarnation of my homily an incarnation of what it looks like to let go of fear and Trust in my love I don't know if you read the story but you know when dr. King first went to Montgomery Alabama his goal was to be a pastor there for a few years and and then hopefully go teach them where he had the goal of being a college professor nice idea that was his idea that he would be a college professor he had no clue that he would be called into this storm of difficulty and anxiety and anguish and became the Civil Rights Movement but when he was down there and the people started to see he was only 26 27 years old wow not much older than you write Gabby how old are you Gabby 9 years older than you much other than me maybe major u27 play nine but imagine Thunder King as a Young Man and of course you know the story of how Rosa Parks kind of initiated the great civil rights movement by deciding not to sit in the back of the bus but but to tell the people she was Rising does that would be that she was going to let go of fear and Trust in God's love attention in the front of the bus and that little gesture that one little step precipitated a marvelous movement of freedom and so he was called on to lead this this bus boycott in to leave the people in Montgomery and he was doing very he was a great orator epreacher obviously with great power but in his own story he tells us there's a marvelous calmly where it comes from and I remember hearing it when I became a deacon touch me so profoundly show me through many hours of my own Darkness e he told of a night when he was just beginning and he only had one child he was a young man the moving to Just Begun midnight Midnight he got a call on the phone and it was a threatening call and it was a medicine called and it was a hateful calling and he had gotten many of those calls but for whatever reasons he says that night at midnight that menacing voice that threatening voices he sat you went downstairs he says me he had he prayed he prayed this prayer that I quote now him has prayer Lord I'm down here trying to do what's right I think I'm right and I think the cause that we represent is right but Lord I must confess now that I'm weak I am faltering I'm losing my courage and I can't let the people see me weak because of they see me weak and losing my courage they will begin to be weak is he was facing his fears I wasn't running from here it is Lord these are my fears and boy those are really fat to be afraid of I don't know what you're afraid of today but this guy had called him and told him he was going to shoot in and blow up his house frankly I don't have to face any fear that big but he faced it that night at that table over a couple coffee and he said at that moment he heard in his inner heart he heard the very voice of God saying to him Martin Luther stand up for righteousness stand up for Josh to stand up for truth and lo I will be with you even until the end of the world in other words. Martin Luther King I am in the cave with you right now and I'm leaving you out and I'll tell you I seen the lightning flash I heard the Thunder Roll I felt sin Breakers dashing try to conquer my soul but I heard the voice of Jesus saying steal light on Jesus Promised never to leave me never to leave me alone no no never alone Jesus Promised never to leave me never to leave me alone until I'm going pulling in believing in him and quotes many people say that was the pivotal moment in his life because from that moment on Hebrew go back and remember that visit in the kitchen that visited Jesus over that cup of coffee and that's the word brothers and sisters that we must carry through that and whatever we do whether we fashioned potato chips or beer chocolate made that fast always pull our hearts back and remember what lent is really about it's about looking for that light and always turning and walking towards it leading us out of our. spheres it's about what dr. king discovered way back in 1955 to not let go of fear and Let the church say trust in my love happy lamps happy Journey amen moment or two I'm going to invite those that are here to be sprinkled with these ashes that we're about to bless your brothers and sisters let us humbly ask our God our Father that he may be pleased to bless you answer to grace these ashes which we will put on your heads and penitence oh God who are moved by acts of you military and respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kind pour out the grace of your blessing on your servants were marked with these ashes as they follow the Lenten observances they may be worthy to come with my mind's made pure to celebrate the Great Eastern mystery of your son who is risen from the dead and who calls us out of our fears into trusting in his love I'm going to write way up turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel can you play Ark rice with no rash stop your. now we rise. prayer of intercession for the sake of the church and the world our response will be Lord hear our prayer Lord hear our prayer for the members of the church maybe he'd the prophets were to return to God with our whole heart and may our actions demonstrate that we are Joy filled and bassadors of Christ let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our for each of us gathered here today and those participating virtually may we journey through lent taking stock of our relationship with God so that be reflecting on our sins and seeking repair we will renew our life in Christ let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer for Faith Community that we may respond to the Holy Spirit let's call to act together to end violence and racism let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer for all those who have died especially those in our care community that they may be welcomed into the Eternal kingdom of God let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer Lord Jesus we come do you do on this first day of our Lenten journey and we ask that you would fill our hearts with that great voice that tells us that we are never alone that you are always with us and that we can't let go of what we were afraid of and Believe in Your Love The ask you to hear all these prayers through Christ Our Lord amen and pray my dear sisters and brothers that My Sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty father praise and glory of his name as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of Lent we entreat you oh Lord through works of penance in love we may turn away from harmful pleasures and be cleansed from our sins and we we make become Worthy celebrate the valley The Passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the Lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts without them up to the Lord let us give thanks to the Lord our God is right and us it is truly right and just our duty and our Salvation always and ever where to give you thanks Lord Holy Father Almighty and eternal God through Christ Our Lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the site sacred Paschal Feast with the joy boy of Mines made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of Charity and participating in the Mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of Grace you bestow on your sons and daughters and so With Angels and Archangels with Thrones and dominions with all the hosts in the powers of Heaven We Sing The Hymn of your glory as without and we say Glory holy holy holy Lord God of hosts Heaven and Earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy O Lord the sound of all Holiness make holy there for these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the Dew fall so that they may become for us what's the body and the blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broken gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it with this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the childish once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink coming through this is the Chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal Covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the Forgiveness of sins do this the mystery of faith give us a savior of the world for by your cross and Resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and Resurrection we offer you Lord the bread of life The Chalice of Salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you hungry we pray the partaking of the body and blood of Christ me may be gathering to one by the Holy Spirit remember Lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of Charity together with Francis our Pope and Wilton are bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep hope of the resurrection and all those who have died in your mercy especially those we wanted remember now and silence who have died welcome them call your beloved Dad into the very light of your face have mercy on us all we pray but with the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God because of Joseph for spouse the Blessed Apostles with Saint Augustine our Patron and all the same to please you throughout the ages we may Merit to be it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but Deliver Us from Evil Deliver Us Lord we pray from every evil graciously Grant peace in our days to buy the help of your mercy always be free from sin and safe all distress as we await the Blessed hope and the coming of Our Savior Jesus Christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever Lord Jesus Christ who said I Leave You peace I give you look down on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously Grant her peace and unity in accordance with your most holy will live and Reign forever and ever Lord Jesus Christ be with you all and with your spirit could just turn and wave and say peace peace peace peace peace peace peace wave to somebody out there if you're watching us Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world have mercy on US Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world have
