Q&A with Ms. Gilmore, the guiding force behind student life at Carroll

Q:  Describe your role at Carroll.

A:  My position encompasses a combination of leadership, discipline, guidance, mentoring and FUN!! My main focus is to empower students to take ownership of their school by creating a positive atmosphere through their academic achievement, social awareness and participation in a variety of student activities. I work with student leadership and class/ club/ activity moderators to organize, plan and execute the various student activities throughout the year. The students and I combine forces to create as many opportunities as we can to show school spirit and promote school pride.

Q:  What do you like most about your job?

A:  I like being able to get to know and interact with all of our students. I get to follow them on their journey through high school and not only see their growth but support them as best I can along the way.

Q:  Who had the biggest influence in your career choice and why?

A:  I would have to say that my family coupled with all of my colleagues here at Carroll, past and present, had the biggest influence over my career choice. When they heard about the opportunity I had been presented, they gave me their full vote of confidence. Despite any fears or ambivalence I had about leaving the classroom, I felt supported and motivated to take the next step in my career. I wholeheartedly believe that the success that I have had over the past 2 ½ years is due greatly in part to their combined faith and belief in what they knew I could achieve even before I did.

Q:  You’ve had an impact on hundreds, if not thousands of students over the years. In what ways have the students impacted you?

A:  Wow!!! As I think back, I believe the students in each and every class, each and every year have impacted me in some way. They have all helped me grow in my faith, have given me patience and have taught me how to listen. As former class moderator, I have a special bond with the classes of 2009 and 2013. In their own unique way, they helped me grow as a professional presenting new challenges for me at every turn which really helped me to identify and improve upon my strengths as well as my weaknesses. They have all given me strength to do things and succeed in ways that I never thought imaginable. Every single student that I have crossed paths with since the summer of 2004 has touched my life with their story, their words, their fears, their kindness and unconditional love and for that I will always be grateful.

Q:  What is your greatest hope for the students at Carroll?

A:  That they continue to be receptive to all the messages that I try to impart upon them every day and that they never let their fear or circumstances stop them from going after whatever they want in this world. It is in each and every one of them to be great in their own way. All they have to do is believe they can and do it!
