The former head of the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission and a highly accomplished civil rights lawyer, Ms. Berrien's work embodies the commitment to social justice and to our nation that is the heart of what we aspire to at Carroll. She brought to Carroll a passion for Catholic schools and an incredible range of support; she could speak of connecting with influential donors and recruiting promising seventh and eighth graders she knew in the same conversation. Several times, she came to visit for an hour and would stay for three. Both Archbishop Carroll and our nation are blessed by her presence.
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund, with whom she did much of her groundbreaking work, has shared a moving remembrance, available here. President Obama shared his condolences as well, in this statement.
