We aren't talking about the pigskin, we are talking about the international pastime known in America as soccer. Our Carroll Boys Varsity Soccer team has grown from a team of seven to a team of 17. Not only have they grown in number, they have dominated the soccer pitch (field), winning both of their games this season. Their chemistry on the field is a direct result of their growing camaraderie off the field.

It is nearly impossible to be a member of the Carroll community and not be impacted by our own Father John Mudd '61. So it is hardly a surprise that the Catholic Business Network of Washington, DC (CBN-DC) named him Clergy of the Year, and will be honoring him at their 4th Annual Gala next month.

This fall we welcome a new batch of students into the Carroll family, but one student in particular is no stranger to the mighty green and gold. Daryll D. Butler II is the son of... you guessed it, Daryll Butler, Esq. His rich family legacy within Carroll also includes President of the Board of Directors, Roger Fairfax, Esq., and John Fairfax who was a member of Carroll's first graduating class.

If you would have asked a 15-year-old Paul Dressler if he would be a Catholic priest in 2017, the answer would have been a quick no. The child of a Jewish father and a Southern Baptist mother, Fr. Dressler spent his formative years as a football player and a member of the wrestling team. During his junior year at Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring, Maryland, the Baptist Evangelical teen attended a retreat sponsored by the local Catholic Church of St. Peter's; this was the initial spark in his life of Catholic service. At age 17, he officially converted to Catholicism and chose to attend Mount St. Mary's College to pursue his degree while being immersed in the Catholic faith. During his collegiate years, he sensed his calling to priesthood, but continued to wrestle with the traditional familial path of life.

Hundreds of spectators rose from the pews of The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as the sounds of Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance filled the room. Seventy three seniors, donned in green and gold robes, were met with facial expressions of pride and excitement as they took their last steps as Carroll students. Two-by-two, the prospective graduates filed into their seats; boys in green on the left, girls in gold on the right. The kind yet commanding voice of President & CEO Beth Blaufuss reminded students in her Call to Order that, “our world is full of change,” and as products of Carroll, they should embrace and enhance the inevitable change that is upon us. She quoted the famous Robert Hoderny saying, “the world will not be saved by sixes or sevens,” as a reminder of the standard of excellence they are to adhere to as they go forth into the world.

As the clock struck six on the evening of June 12, 2017, the doors of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Roof Terrace Restaurant opened. Guests presented their silver ticket to enter a hallway of gratitude to a handful of continuous donors. The friendly face of President & CEO of Carroll, Beth Blaufuss, greeted each attendee as they entered into the 25th Annual Spring Benefit. The first hour was filled with reconnecting with Carroll family over the sounds of The Exclusives, a live jazz band. Former classmates greeted each other with the classic, “I haven’t seen you in years,” and, “Do you remember…” that accompanies the reuniting of old friends. Many gathered under blue skies on the terrace that overlooks Washington, DC, and has a view of the Washington Monument in the distance. Chatter continued in between bites of salmon, steak, potatoes, and vegetables until two students took the stage to deliver When You Believe by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Join the Carroll community today in celebration of the Class of 2017 at the school's sixty-third Commemcement Exercises, and the formal conferring of diplomas. The ceremony will be held in the Upper Church of The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception today, Thursday at 6:00 PM. Council member Robert C. White, Jr. (Carroll Class of 2000) is the commencement speaker.
